Shab Barat is an Islamic festival celebrated by Muslims all over the world. This festival is celebrated on the night between the 14th and 15th of Sha'ban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar. Shab-e-Barat is considered the holy night of the Islamic calendar, which is also called Laylat-e-Barat or Laylat-e-Baraat or the middle of Sha'ban

"shab" is a Persian word for night, while in Arabic, "barat" is synonymous with salvation and forgiveness. It is believed that on this day, Allah (swt) Almighty writes their destiny for the coming year based on their past deeds. Therefore, the night is spent in seeking God's mercy on any wrongdoing.

In the Arab world, this festival is called Laylat al-Barat. The festival comes before Ramadan.

The holy night of Barat is celebrated with religious fervor and devotion across the country. 

Practice on Shab e Barat

Shab-e-Barat is celebrated in which people spend most of the night, usually taking short breaks and praying to Allah (swt), and reciting the Qur'an till dawn. Many also visit nearby cemeteries to apologize to the victim's families. Charity is done (money and food) are being distributed to the poor.

Shab-e-Barat History

The festival dates back to the time when the twelfth Imam of the Shia Muslims, Muhammad-al-Mahdi(ajtf), was born. Shab-e-Barat night is celebrated as His birthday. 

On the other hand, the Sunni Muslim community believes that only God saved Noah's (a.s) ark from the flood that day. That is why people all over the world celebrate Shab Barat.
