Some historians believe that April Fool's Day is dates to 1582 when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. In the Julian calendar, as in the Hindu calendar, the new year begins with the change of spring around April 1.

Those who were slow to receive the news or failed to recognize that the new year began on January 1 and celebrated it from April 1 to the last week of March became a bit of a joke and a hoax. And they're called "April Fools." In these jokes, a paper is placed on the back of a fish and is known as a " poisson d’avril" (April fish), which is said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person.

History of April Fools’ Day

During the eighteenth century, April Fool's Day spread throughout Britain. In Scotland, the tradition became a two-day event, beginning with " hunting the gowk", in which people were sent to phony errands (gowk is a word for cuckoo bird, a symbol for fool) and followed by Tailie Day, which involves making fun of people who have been involved, such as giving fake tails or "kicking me" at them.
